Personal Safety Program

Apex trainer leading a workplace personal-safety demonstration

Occupational violence and aggression is a recognised psychosocial hazard, not a test of individual temperament. The Personal Safety Program gives frontline workers, lone operators and anyone who deals with the public the practical capability to stay safe: to read a situation early, de-escalate it, and protect themselves if it escalates anyway.

It combines discussion-based learning with hands-on physical skills, and it is built around your workplace, whether that is real estate, community services, education, healthcare, or any setting where people work alone or in someone else's space. Physical response is always framed as a last resort, using only reasonable and proportionate force consistent with the law.

What the program covers

1. Environmental safety

Identify and control personal safety hazards in your work environment. Environmental scanning, the risk management process, safe exits, and taking control of the spaces you work in.

2. Personal safety

Control personal safety risks, trust your intuition and recognise unsafe behaviours. Safe positioning, communication, planning, personal presentation, and self-defence fundamentals.

3. Responding to escalation

Tools and techniques for de-escalation before a situation peaks: choice of words, tone of voice, body language, and setting clear professional boundaries.

4. Responding to emergencies

What to do when a situation is already out of control. The fight, flight or freeze response, creating distance, evacuation, calling for help, and last-resort physical protection.

Every module includes practical work. Participants practise stances, blocks and escapes in a supported environment, building the confidence to act under pressure. The program also covers self-care and recovery, because staying safe at work is about more than the moment of an incident. Delivery is practitioner-led by the highly qualified Apex team, using a guided reflection approach so the skills carry back to the job.
